9/13 Lincoln log

Lincoln Families,

I hope you enjoyed the second weekend of the school year. Whether cheering for the Bears, Packers or any other team,  hopefully your family enjoyed the return of Sunday football and our fall-like temperatures!

The past nine school days have been full of firsts for all of us. In reflection, I couldn’t be prouder of our Lincoln kids, teachers and families for all their patience and perseverance though the start of Remote Learning 2.0. Together we will continue to navigate this path. There is nothing simple about this.

This week marks the first of our supply pick up days. These days have been created to provide teachers the opportunity to send home instructional resources that will be utilized in upcoming lessons. Materials can be picked up on the Franklin playground under the tents.  Each teacher will have a table where student bags will be located. The bags are clearly marked with student names. Your child, a family member or designee can show up, grab your child’s bag and go. Below is the schedule for this week’s pick up. Please take extra caution to make sure that you grab the correct bag!

Supply Pick Up Schedule

Tuesday, September 15, 3rd Grade
Wednesday, September 16, 2nd Grade

**Please keep your child’s backpack in a safe place, as it will be used throughout the year.
**This week, in addition to your child’s bag, please be sure to grab a ball for PE from the ball rack under the tent.
** Please contact Mr. Godfrey or Ms. Dubois if you are unable to pick up your child’s supplies or to arrange an alternative time: godfreyc@district90.org or duboist@district90.org

Don’t forget that Open House is scheduled for Tuesday evening, September 15. At 6:30 on Tuesday evening, please be on the lookout for an email from your child’s teacher that will include a link to their Open House presentation. Although, we’d prefer our traditional Open House format, I’m hopeful that you’ll find these presentations helpful in getting to know your child’s teacher, curriculum and what to expect during this unusual year. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or me if you have questions.

Each year, D90 students are administered benchmark assessments in the area of Reading and Writing. Although it will look a bit different this year, in the coming days and weeks Lincoln teachers and staff will begin administering these assessments to our kids virtually. Each student in 1st-4th grade will be administered the Fountas and Pinnell Reading assessment as well as the Math inventory assessment. Our Kindergarten students will be administered the Kindergarten screening assessment. The data gathered from these assessments will provide teachers with insightful information that will guide lesson planning and differentiation of instruction. To accomplish this task virtually, grade levels will be assigning students asynchronous learning activities on their particular assessment day. On these days, students will be provided a personalized schedule to meet with their classroom teachers or a member of the Lincoln assessment team for assessment. In addition to their asynchronous learning activities, students will also attend their scheduled special area classes for that particular day. Below are the assessment days for each grade level at Lincoln.

Lincoln Assessment Schedule:
Kindergarten: Tuesday, September 22
First Grade: Friday, September 18
Second Grade: Monday, September 21
Third Grade: Thursday, September 24
Fourth Grade: Wednesday, September 23

As always, thank you for your support of Lincoln. Please never hesitate to reach out if there is anything more I can do to support your child or family. Have a wonderful week.  CG

The Library Lowdown

Every year your children are invited to participate in an all-state reading challenge.  Students in grades K-2 can engage in the Monarch Challenge and grades 3rd-4th in the Bluestem Blast Challenge.

A list of books have been compiled by Illinois librarians to create this year’s reading lists.  Reading these books is a great way to expose students to some great books that they might not normally pickup.  The Monarch list includes fiction and non-fiction picture books and early readers.  The Bluestem list has fiction and non-fiction picture books and chapter books.  In K-2, they will be listening to at least five stories so everyone can vote in the spring.

The reading logs will be coming home this week in their supply backpacks. It will also be available on the library website. If your child would like to participate, then please keep the reading log in a handy spot at home so they can check off the books as they read them.

Be sure to utilize the River Forest Public LIbrary as well to work through the list.

I will be explaining how the programs work and introducing the books to the students this coming week.

Please email me if you have any questions about these reading programs.
