9/6 Lincoln Log

Happy Labor Day Lincoln Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend with family and friends and that the extra day provided you the opportunity to reset and recharge after a busy first few days of school.

Please remember that if your family traveled over the weekend to one of the 48 states currently indicated “orange” on the Cook County Travel Advisory list, it is required that your unvaccinated Lincoln Eagle be administered a PCR Covid-19 test at a testing center or medical facility upon return to Cook County. For any situation where this scenario is applicable, the student will remain out of school until Ms. Godellas has received confirmation of the negative PCR Covid-19 test. This guidance is updated regularly, so please be sure to always view the Cook County Travel Advisory website for the most up to date information.

Many thanks to all the Fun Lunch volunteers who joined us last week for our first Fun Lunch since March 2020. It was so nice to bring back this weekly tradition for our kids. Fun Lunch would not be possible without the leadership of Ashley Brice, Cathy O’Neil, and their army of Fun Lunch volunteers!

Please look for communication from your child’s teacher – this Thursday, September 9 will be our virtual “Open House.” Unfortunately, due to current Covid-19 mitigations, we are unable to congregate as a school community for this fun and informational evening. Therefore, the Lincoln teachers have created virtual presentations that will provide you an overview of what to expect of your child’s year at Lincoln. Look for these links in an email on Thursday evening. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have after viewing these presentations.

Finally, one of the things that makes Lincoln such a Fine, Fine School is our intentional efforts that focus on celebrating kindness and inclusivity. Therefore, please feel free to spread some Lincoln School Love to a student, staff member, or community member: Lincoln Love “Shout Out” Form

As always, please never hesitate to reach out if there is anything more I can do to support your kids and family and thanks for your continued support of Lincoln.

Make it a wonderful week. CG

8/22 Lincoln Log

Lincoln Families,

Welcome back to school! I hope you and your family enjoyed every moment of this final weekend of summer. Whether your summer was spent locally or traveling, I hope you created some wonderful new memories with family and friends. I enjoyed some time “off the grid” in Hawaii and with the Godfreys in Florida. Here’s the latest snapshot of the Godfreys:

While the end of summer is often bittersweet, I’m hopeful that your family is as excited as the Lincoln staff is for the return of our kids to Lincoln this week. While the backdrop of the global pandemic will require our creativity, patience and flexibility, I have every confidence that it’s going to be another amazing year at our Fine Fine School.

Travel Guidance: In the event your final summer days find you returning from a location indicated on the Cook County Travel Advisory, please be aware of the following requirements necessary for your child to attend the first day of school and beyond. Under the current guidance, any non-vaccinated D90 student must obtain a negative Covid-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Cook County or adhere to a 10 day quarantine upon arrival. Please note that remote learning will not be offered for travel related quarantine. Therefore, please plan accordingly if your travels will coincide with the beginning of the school year.  Attached you will find a link to the most up-to-date Cook County Travel Advisory. This guidance is updated every Tuesday, so please be sure to check frequently for any updates.

If you haven’t yet done so, please take some time to review the Lincoln Back to School Guide. There is a plethora of information included to assist your family in supporting our safe return to school. Most specifically, please note the entry that your child should use for arrival and dismissal.

Over the summer new bike racks were ordered for the Franklin side of Lincoln. Unfortunately, there is a possibility they will not be installed by Wednesday. Therefore any kids who enter on Franklin are encouraged to secure their bike to the inside fence on Franklin Ave.  Hopefully, the new bike racks will arrive soon.

Tomorrow evening we welcome all families new to Lincoln to join our virtual New Family Welcome. The Zoom link was sent last week.

It’s going to be an exciting week. Enjoy these final days of summer. As always, please never hesitate to reach out if there is anything more I can do to support your family’s back to school transition. Welcome back. CG

8/15 Lincoln Log

Lincoln Families,

Happy Summer! I hope this message finds you and your kids soaking up every single moment of this summer that is coming to a close all too quickly. I hope that you’ve capitalized on every opportunity to create new memories, rest, and rejuvenate. On a personal note, I enjoyed some time “off the grid” this summer, but couldn’t be more optimistic about the journey and adventures that await during the 2021-2022 school year.

The countdown is on here at Lincoln and we are excited to welcome your kids back to school on Wednesday, August 25. Due to continued Covid-19 mitigations, the beginning of this school year will look and feel different than years past. However, as was shared in Dr. Condon’s message to families last week, D90’s priorities for the year are as follows:

  1. Protect the health and safety of all students, staff, families, and community to the greatest extent practical
  2. Maintain a high-quality, equitable program of in-person instruction for all students

To download and view the D90 Reopening Guide, please click this link: SD90 Safe School Reopening Guide, 2021-22

Travel Guidance: As you map out the remainder of your summer, I wanted to specifically address Covid-19 Quarantine and Travel guidance as it relates to travel. Please note that under the current guidance, any non-vaccinated D90 student must obtain a negative Covid-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Cook County or adhere to a 10 day quarantine upon arrival. Please note that remote learning will not be offered for travel related quarantine. Therefore, please plan accordingly if your travels will coincide with the beginning of the school year.

Class Placement and Lincoln Safety Mitigations: Finally, please look for a more detailed email from me later this week outlining specific information related to Covid-19 mitigations and Lincoln specific information.  In addition, this message will detail how and when you can access your child’s class placement information. Please know that only families who have completed the registration process will have access to their child’s placement.

We couldn’t be more excited to safely welcome your kids back to our Fine Fine School.  Until then, mask up and keep safe.

See you soon. CG

Our year will be a fluid one and will require flexibility, but we are excited for what it holds and look forward to seeing everyone soon.

You will need your student’s 5-digit district ID number. (It might be found in emails from “District 90 Registrar” at powerschools@district90.org.) To make future purchasing easier, you can create an account to save the ID number and your purchasing information.

6/6 Lincoln Log

Lincoln Families,

I hope you enjoyed the summer heat this weekend and are full of excitement for the final days of school.

The end of each school year always brings with it a variety of emotions. Feelings of excitement for the summer days that lie ahead, exhaustion for all the work and passion poured into the previous 170 days and sadness as our 4th graders and their families move on to Roosevelt after five years at Lincoln.

However, this year those emotions are felt even deeper than ever before. While Covid-19 dominated the past year, I’m hopeful that you don’t allow it to define the 2020-2021 school year. Instead, when you reflect upon this year, I hope the themes that surface in your mind are the resilience of our kids, the unparalleled dedication and work of our teachers, and the countless selfless acts of kindness that were on display throughout the Lincoln community.

In every way, the kids at Lincoln schooled us all in lessons of perseverance, positivity and inclusivity for the past year. They played the hand they were dealt with understanding, compliance and appreciation for the gift of simply being together. Earlier this year many thought that kids were incapable of wearing masks, keeping distance and complying with all the Covid-19 mitigations. Well, it’s safe to say they silenced the critics. It gives me great hope and pride knowing that these kids will one day be our future leaders, doctors, teachers and first responders. As they grow up and use lessons learned this year, it’s undeniable that our future is bright.

Like most professions, prior to 2020, educators had no playbook for teaching during a global pandemic. Thrust into the unknown, we implemented plans that had never been created and literally “built the plane while flying it,” and now we are bringing that same aircraft to safe landing. This year our work as educators faced more critics and scrutiny than ever before. Yet we have all emerged stronger, better and wiser educators for having endured this shared experience.

Even through the trials and tribulations of the past 170 days, it was the small and gentle acts of kindness that will live on and be the legacy of this emotional year. Over the past fifteen months, there have been moments of frustration, sadness, and jubilation for us all…. and perhaps there were also times when we never thought June would arrive : -). However, just as we do each year, we’ve arrived at the final week of school. Crossing the finish line this year feels a bit more symbolic and we do so with a greater sense of pride, gratitude and  accomplishment than ever before.

Aside from our teachers, no one worked harder this year than Ms. Godellas (the finest school nurse in the land) and our Maintenance and Custodial staff. Without the grit and dedication of these incredible individuals, this school year would have looked markedly different. They are the best in the business – please be sure to celebrate them in these final days with some LINCOLN LOVE.

As we prepare to close this chapter in the story of our Fine Fine School, I offer unparalleled gratitude to our PTO Presidents Devin Howe and Alexis Agema. When accepting the call to serve our community in this volunteer capacity, they had no idea the journey that lay ahead. Thanks to their leadership, we literally reinvented opportunities our PTO has so proudly provided our kids. With lots of patience and collaboration, they led this organization to provide our kids with countless new/reimagined and creative virtual opportunities during this school year. Leading a volunteer organization is a labor of love, so please be sure to send some Lincoln Love their way. I’m indebted to their partnership.

Finally, in my opinion, effective and timely communication is always at the core of any successful organization. It’s no different with the Lincoln School PTO. Therefore, special thanks to the PTO communications team composed of Sarah Donoho, Lauren Behan and Vanessa Druckman. They spend countless hours each week and much of their weekends compiling and scheduling our school’s main publication. The Lincoln Log is one of the most comprehensive, organized and consistent school communication tools anywhere!

These final days will come and go quickly and also look to be a bit hot. Don’t forget to dress your kids in light layers and ensure they have a water bottle with them.

In closing, Happy Summer Lincoln Families. Thank you for your continued support of our school.  Don’t spend your summer reliving the past or anxious for what’s to come. Instead, live in the moment, and soak up every family memory, every moment of relaxation and every ray of sunshine. Until we meet again in August, don’t forget to work hard, have a great day and to show your Lincoln School P.R.I.D.E.

Happy Summer, CG

Each year on the last day of school, Green4Good at Lincoln collects leftover new and gently used school supplies, organizes them, and donates them.  This year, we will be donating leftover school supplies to SCARCE,  an organization dedicated to keeping resources out of landfills. SCARCE distributes school supplies to teachers and non-profit organizations struggling to afford them.

Kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade are participating this year.  If you DO NOT wish for your child’s supplies to be donated, and would rather reuse them at home, that’s great!  Please let your teacher know, and your child will bring supplies home.  Otherwise, all supplies will be collected by noon on Friday June 11.  Thank you for your support! Please contact Alexis Murphy at alexis_murphy@hotmail.com with any questions.
