5/31 Lincoln Log

Happy Memorial Day Lincoln Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend. Hopefully it was full of family, friends and lots of relaxation and left your kids and our teachers rejuvenated for the final “home stretch” of the school year.  With only 9 school days remaining, it will be a busy finish to the end of the year.

As referenced last week, 4th grade families, please be sure to see this message for important information regarding the final days of 4th grade.

On Thursday, June 10, we will hold a “Pandemic Style,” Field Day. Unfortunately, this event will be for our kids and staff only. Also our annual “Clap Out” for the 4th graders will also take place prior to dismissal on Friday, June 11, but will also be limited to students and staff only.

At Lincoln we continue to teach and model kindness, acceptance, and inclusivity as the foundation of our school culture. This year, that kindness and acceptance was on full display in one of our kindergarten classrooms. Earlier this year, Nora Ignoffo was diagnosed with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that resulted in the loss of her hair. Not only has she persevered this year, but so did each of her 5/6 year old peers by wearing hats, scarfs and other head coverings all led by Ms. Suzuki’s inclusive spirit. That inclusivity and acceptance led the Ignoffo family to share the following message with our school community regarding Nora’s condition:

Lincoln Families,

As many of you have likely noticed, Nora lost all her hair over the past few months. As a result we have received many concerned inquiries about Nora and her health. We are happy to say that Nora is entirely healthy and well.

She was diagnosed with alopecia – a highly unpredictable, non-contagious, autoimmune disease that causes hair loss in two percent of the population. Although alopecia is not physically disabling, it can be emotionally challenging. So far, with the support of family, friends and the wonderful Lincoln school community, Nora has a healthy self-esteem with minimal moments of sadness. However, as more activities start-up and the kids grow older, Nora will likely experience increased moments of hurt feelings as a result of individuals unfamiliar with alopecia. So, as a first step to increase alopecia awareness, we recently spoke to her classmates and read two books: Bald is Beautiful & What is Silly Hair Day With No Hair? The key take-aways were: (1) Nora’s hair may or may not grow back – we just don’t know; (2) Nora doesn’t feel sick and (3) alopecia is not “catchy”.

We aim for Nora’s peers to be comfortable with her alopecia and discussing it with the adults in their life should they have any questions. We sincerely appreciate all the help and support you can give by discussing alopecia with your kids and others – especially others who may inquire about Nora’s baldness at the playground, soccer field, ballet, pool, etc.

Thank you again for your support as Nora starts her journey with alopecia – we look forward to seeing everyone around town this summer!

Greg & Heather Ignoffo

For tomorrow’s Morning Message, I’ll be reading one of the books Greg and Heather mentioned in their note to the entire student body and reinforcing our commitment at Lincoln of acceptance, inclusivity, and kindness.

Finally, as we enter the final days of the school year, some remote families have inquired about returning to Lincoln for the final days of school. Please know that your family is welcome to return to Lincoln at any time. Please contact me for more information.

Please take some time in these final days to send some LINCOLN LOVE to our incredible staff for all they’ve done during this “one of a kind” school year.

As always, thanks for your continued support of Lincoln, please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything more I can do to support your family.

Have a great week. CG

5/23 Lincoln log

Lincoln Families,

I hope you enjoyed this “summer like,” weekend.

As we wrap up the month of May, many thanks are owed to Candy Singh and Jahee Hong Yi for all of their efforts and advocacy for assisting in  Lincoln’s first observance of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Candy and Jahee collaborated to create a resource guide that aided our staff in highlighting Asian culture throughout the Month of May. Thanks to their help Asian fun facts, music culture was included in my daily Morning Messages to kids. Additionally, last week we had a school wide author visit with Natasha Yim. It was a wonderful month, thanks to their dedication to this project.

Fourth grade families, it’s hard to believe that your kids are entering their final thirteen days at Lincoln. Please be sure to read the message I sent to all 4th grade families last week outlining the many 4th grade events that are taking place over the next few weeks. In the event you didn’t receive that email, here is the message.

This week we will be celebrating the Lincoln School Instructional Aide Support Staff. These incredible “behind the scenes,” individuals literally make our Fine Fine School run. They are always found working a recess or lunch shift, making copies, running errands and supporting our teachers and kids. Please take a moment this week to share some LINCOLN LOVE  with these Fine Fine individuals:

Ms. JoAnn Clark

Mr. Richard Taylor

Ms. Leigh Miles

Ms. Monique Forte

Ms. Tess Vanek

Ms. Jennifer Medland

Ms. Maggie English

Finally, don’t forget there is no school on Friday, May, 28 or Monday, May 31.

As always, thanks for your continued support of Lincoln. Please reach out if there is ever anything more I can do to support your family. Have a wonderful week. CG

Volunteer for Lincoln’s Native Gardens!

Lincoln has several areas of native plantings, including 2 curbside native gardens (Franklin and Park) and the garden outside the Kindergarten classrooms. These gardens are part of the West Cook Wild Ones Wildlife Corridor, AND are certified as Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation (NWF)

Native gardens serve as habitat for pollinators and other wildlife, provide important environmental services in cleaning our air, soil, and water, can be a didactic resource for teachers and students, and are relatively low maintenance. They DO however require ongoing weeding and occasional rearranging and watering. Whether you have a few hours a month OR want to take the lead, whether you have garden experience OR would just like to learn while meeting other parents, we would LOVE to count you in. Many hands make light work!

Please contact Amy Hansmann (amy@hansmann.org) or Alexis Murphy (alexis_murphy@hotmail.com) to express interest by May 31.

  • 1 in 20 U.S. adults experiences a serious mental illness each year, but less than two-thirds get treatment.*
  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth experience a mental health condition each year, but only half get treatment.

5/2 Lincoln log

Lincoln Families,

Happy May! I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Like schools across the country, the first week of May is annually designated as our Staff Appreciation Week at Lincoln School. Over the past 365 days we’ve all been schooled in lessons of patience, resilience, and kindness. The teachers at our Fine Fine School are no different.

Our teachers are naturally adept at being quick learners, flexible, and motivating for kids. However, for over a year, their resilience has shone brighter than ever; even while under the intense visibility, vulnerability, and scrutiny. The Fine Fine Teachers at Lincoln are natural actors and performers, but their audience is generally limited to the ten and under crowd, allowing for naturally embedded silly songs, ridiculous outfits, class cheers, and just about any other trick to engage and motivate kids.  That’s what we signed up to do as elementary educators and what we love to do. However, as the pandemic surged this past Fall and “in-person” school was delayed, our audience and critics grew to include parents, grandparents, nannies, pod leaders, and countless other relations, all with a front row seat to every lesson, silly moment, behavior correction, and technology malfunction; not to mention their own questions and critiques of each lesson. Nowhere in the training for any educator was a textbook or course dedicated to teaching our youngest learners remotely or in a blended format while also adhering to the countless safety mitigations of a global pandemic.

Yes, the argument can be made that no career path was quite prepared to adapt to “pandemic life.” However, I would argue that there is no career path quite as unique as educating, engaging, and building relationships with the youngest learners.

It’s no secret to anyone that I often refer to Lincoln as a “Fine Fine School.” Each day, decision, and lesson since August 24 has not been perfect, but in my opinion they have been Fine Fine Fine.  That is in large part due to the passion, energy, and dedication the entire Lincoln staff have poured into making the 2020-21 school year as memorable and normal as possible.

Many years from now, when this group of kids have taken their place as our future teachers, doctors, nurses, first responders, and national leaders, I’m confident they will remember how their Fine Fine School helped them to persevere, learn, and laugh during some of the most challenging times in history.

It’s sometimes overlooked that teachers are also mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons who often put the needs of their class before that of their own health and family. All that said, this year more so than any other, I encourage you to celebrate our Fine Fine Teachers and all Lincoln School staff members who make our school run. Please take a moment to spread some LINCOLN LOVE FORM  or celebrate our staff with your own personal gesture of gratitude. As we enter the homestretch of the school year, I am prouder than ever in our Fine Fine  Teachers, Fine Fine Kids, and our Fine Fine School!

In other news, this week will continue our IAR testing for 3rd and 4th grade. Below is the schedule for the week.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is IAR-2021.png

Finally, don’t forget to submit any feedback regarding next year’s class placement by Friday, May 7. Please follow these instructions.

As always, thanks for your continued support of Lincoln. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything more I can do to support your family. Have a great week.

Social Emotional Learning

In honor of Earth Day:

10 Native American Teachings to Live By

  • 1) The Earth is our Mother, care for her.
  • 2) Honor your ancestors through your actions.
  • 3) Open your heart and soul.
  • 4) All life is sacred; treat all beings with respect.
  • 5) Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more.
  • 6) Put the good of all before your own interests.
  • 7) Give constant thanks for each new day.
  • 8) Speak the truth; but only of good in others.
  • 9) Follow the rhythms of nature; rise and retire with the sun.
  • 10) Enjoy life’s journey, but leave no tracks.

They seem so simple right? But somehow these core concepts are easy to forget or take for granted when life gets challenging.
