Lincoln Families,

I hope you enjoyed the sunshine this weekend. Although it is still a bit chilly outside, I’m definitely enjoying the sunshine and the daylight hours getting longer! This week looks to be one of the nicest of 2021! 

With Spring Break rapidly approaching, we realize that many families may use this time away from school to travel outside of Illinois. Lincoln and D90 continue to adhere to the guidance of the Cook County Department of Public Health: Cook County Department of Public Health Travel Guidance . If you are planning to travel to a state that is currently designated as “Orange,” prior to returning to school your child will need to submit a negative Covid-19 test or adhere to a ten day quarantine. So that we can be adequately prepared for school after the break, as soon as possible, please share with your child’s teacher whether your family will be providing the school with a Covid-19 test or if your family will be quarantining for ten days upon return from any travel. Sharing this information with teachers in advance will be extremely helpful as we plan for school in April.

We’ve spent the past several weeks preparing for the possibility of returning to a full school day after the return from Spring Break. While this decision has not yet been confirmed by the D90 School Board, at Lincoln we have been busy behind the scenes planning for the possibility of new schedules as well as other countless building logistics that will need to be modified to ensure the safety of all. One such logistical change will be students attending specials (Art, Music, PE, LIbrary and STEM) more frequently and  “in person.” Therefore, beginning this week, in addition to PE (which has been “in person,” since December), all grade levels will begin attending a second special class “in person.” This slow roll out will allow our incredible specials teachers the opportunity to sample how their instruction and physical space might best safely accommodate our kids for “in person” instruction. 

As you can imagine, lunch and incorporating “maskless” time into the school day is perhaps the biggest hurdle we face in planning for a longer school day. As referenced in Dr. Condon’s message/survey to families last week, lunch will likely take place in unique places such as the gym/hallway floors and outdoor picnic style lunches (weather permitting).  These spaces provide for maximum distance and will best honor all safety protocols and guidance. In the event the decision is made to increase the length of our school day, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have an interest in volunteering to support our school between the hours of 11:00AM-1:00PM.

Each year the state of Illinois requires that all public schools hold an “Erin’s Law” presentation for all students. “Erin’s Law” requires that all public schools in each state implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program. This year we are excited to again partner with Victor Pacini in presenting this important information to our kids. In the past, Victor has personally visited Lincoln. However, this year he has created virtual presentations that will be shared with our kids during the week of March 22. Should you wish to opt your child out of this presentation, please let me know no later than Friday, March 19. 

Finally, if you haven’t yet completed the 5Essentials Survey, please take a few moments to participate. The Illinois 5Essentials survey is designed to generate a comprehensive picture of the inner workings of our schools. Teachers, parents, and students will be able to share their insights and perceptions about our schools as we develop school improvement plans. Students in grades 4-8, teachers, and parents/guardians will be able to participate in this online and confidential survey that is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chicago. The survey will be open for participation until April 2, 2021.

Please join us for Lincoln’s first Family Trivia Night!  Lincoln families are invited to participate in a fun evening of virtual family friendly trivia. This event will be held in user friendly Kahoot/Zoom platforms. Families will compete against one another for points with the top 3 families being awarded prizes. Please note due to COVID regulations all participants must be from a single family household. Advanced registration is required and a portion of the proceeds will help support the Lincoln PTO.

2020-2021 Lincoln Flip Book 

We are happy to announce that this year we will be offering a 2020-2021 Flip Book! This condensed “yearbook” allows us to provide school pictures and snapshots of our year in review. The book will be sold for purchase through our school picture distributor Van Gogh. More information to come in the following weeks.

2020-21 Flip Book Cover Contest

The theme for this year’s Cover Contest is “Be safe and Show your Lincoln School P.R.I.D.E.” If your child is interested in submitting a design for this year’s contest, please be sure it is submitted to Mr. Godfrey by Monday, March 22. All designs should be submitted on a plain while sheet of paper with the students name on the back. Tune into Mr. Godfrey’s Morning Messages for more information.

Kindergarten Author Visit – Books Available for Order

Lincoln School welcomed author Sara Shacter on Thursday, March 4th.  She met with both morning and afternoon kindergarten classes.  Her book is available for sale through Anderson’s and will come with a signed bookplate.  You can order the book online (click here!) and books will be brought to Lincoln for distribution.

Roosevelt Middle School PTO Co-Presidents Genevieve Jones and Beth Vlerick will ask each candidate about 10 questions and give them two minutes for their responses.
